Heading North To Cooler Temperatures

It started off like a normal work day, though I didn’t sleep well so I was exhausted in the morning.  A few students showed up for my midday class but none turned out for the section after.  Good.  It allowed me to leave early and begin my mini weekend vacation up north.

A group of friends rented some cabins in Ban Nam Khem where the temperatures are much cooler and the air is clean.  I drove up with two other people.  But before that, I had to take a taxi from my university to a meeting place along the highway.  Of all the taxis in Bangkok, mine had never been to that area.  I don’t understand how that’s possible.  It’s across the street from the airport!  After much hesitation and slow driving I finally arrived and met up.

The drive up was long.  And the encroaching darkness didn’t make finding the campsite any easier.  After a few u-turns we found the rest of our group who were kind enough to start cooking dinner.  The night air was cool but it was a welcome relief from Bangkok.

We got a charcoal grill going and snacked on some appetizers while everything cooked.  The guy who was responsible for organizing this outing is also a professional chef, so you can imagine the menu he had prepared.  Excellent food… and wine.  We talked, ate, and drank for a few hours and then I excused myself to my room.  The cabins are quite nice though the beds are rock hard.  Next time I’ll be sure to bring some padding!  The plus was that we had a TV and hot water, modern conveniences that can make or break a trip.
