Mealy Cake & Love

My rice pudding attempt using leftover rice grit from horchata recipe wasn’t a complete failure. I discovered a new type of glue! Looked like a brick of Elmer’s. Baking the “batter” was the wrong way to go. Next time I will simmer first to soften the rice and leave the baking for the golden crust effect.

Sales for this month (August) picked up a little. But we were still short for rent. Out-of-pocket expense. Doh! I hope to be breaking that habit real soon.

For most of the day I prepared for this evening’s class. Slides were cool, students showing up 30 minutes late wasn’t. Bad traffic, can’t blame them for that… or can I? I went over the allotted time again. Talked too much trying to get through everything I prepared. Should have cut down the content given our late start. I’ll keep that in mind for next week’s class. We did have a good number of students attend though. Fifteen I think! Its a tricky time because most people must come directly after work. Then sit through a class until 8pm. They’re tire. They’re hungry. I’ll try to move the times back a little or serve some refreshments. At any rate, it a free class so they can’t complain that much.

Pork & Beans

A dinner of champions. Ergo my meal for this evening. Easy to make, high in calories, low in nutritional value. Sounds like a win-win to me!

Another normal day at the office. Prepared my slides for tomorrow free class: L.O.V.E. We have seventeen students who signed up. Now whether that many actually show up is yet to be seen. But I think the majority will. I download a fun book about body language and dating. Even has photos of the different scenarios and subliminal messages. I think the students will have fun trying them out at least.

Nan’s started teaching Thai to a British guy who’s married to her former student. Nice guy. Had lunch together. They’re packing in two two-hour sessions in one day. That’s a lot of teaching and learning. But they live so far away that to commute into the city is a hassle. Probably take a couple hours just in traveling.

Getting a little worried about finances. Trying to make it a few more months without having to ask for help. But without an income from the school yet and mounting bills… I may be taking a big old bite of humble pie soon. Oye, I can see how small business owners usually die out in the first year. Doh!

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

A surprisingly short day thanks to our student canceling class. You’d think that would be cause for celebration, being able to go home early, but you’d be wrong. As luck would always have it, it rained. Exactly at 5pm. So the commute home was a nice two hours. Plenty of time to catch up on my reading and practice my aggressive driving skills. One nice thing was a pair of rainbows that appeared on the periphery of the storm front and the sunny skies. Quite strange actually to be driving in bright sunlight and have it raining as well. But perfect conditions for a rainbow!

Did some bookkeeping today. Got paid by my business student. Also deposited other course fees. So at least the old bank account is in the black… until I write the rent check tomorrow. There is some hope for our Japanese classes. Found one teacher who is more in tune with our budget constraints. The only problem is her schedule. No weekends or evenings. Setback. We’ll see if any student are available during work hours. God I hope so.

Yesterday took care of more accounting work. Also discovered that to renew my company’s bank book I need all 5 signatures on it. Even though we did the paperwork to authorize only 2 of 5, the original had 5 so everything that comes after does as well. WTF. In the evening went to see the Expendables at the Emporium. The movie should have been called Guys Shooting Guns. The plot was lame. And the actors were a bunch of old Hollywood action guys. Funny to see them all together on screen but not cool enough to make a movie out of it. Another weird thing was Jet Li was listed in the main credits but really didn’t do, or say, much through the entire picture. He wasn’t even in many shots. Lame. The whole movie was lame.
